The Rembrandt Association helps Dutch museums collect great works of art for everyone to enjoy. Some of these works, such as Johannes Vermeer's Milkmaid at the Rijksmuseum, have become true icons.

From sculptures of classical antiquity to contemporary glass installations: wildly different art objects, all united by one characteristic... they are classified as public heritage and are among the very best of their kind.

Criteria for support

Quality

We support only the very best. But what is that exactly? The answer varies from museum to museum: from a Bronze Age ceremonial sword to a 17th-century painting, or a rare piece of Groningen silver. The very best has countless faces.

The bigger picture

Since we touch base with all Dutch museums, we keep a sharp eye on the bigger picture. This enables our team of experts to properly assess which acquisitions have added value. Value for a museum itself which wants to acquire a work of art, but also for the art collection of the Netherlands.

Visibility

We only support works of art if they are indispensable to the story a museum tells. That is why supported acquisitions are always on view. Except when the vulnerability of the object does not allow it, as in the case of drawings or prints. Large installations are also not shown permanently, but on a regular basis.
